Owner since 2010 of Joe Bruce’s Custom Flies (www.JoeBruce.net). Owner of the Fisherman’s Edge Fly Shop from March 1989 – May 2004 (15 years 3 months).
Grow up on a farm, hunting and fishing with his dad. There he found his “true love”: the fly rod. He has traveled to many destinations and he always keeps his fly rod with him. JoeB went to Glen Burnie High School 1962-1964 (just one year before JoeS was at the school)
A half century of fly fishing, as well as tying flies, Joe is widely recognized for his great understanding of fish and an appreciation of their environment. It wasn’t always that way though; as he admits that his first experience with the fly rod was not a pretty sight. As he recalls, he had bought a dozen flies from a department store for a dollar (you can imagine the quality) and went to a farm pond armed with his Dad’s hardware store outfit. He still managed to catch some bluegill, and was hooked. Soon after, he started to tie his own flies and bought his first fly tying kit for eight dollars and proceeded to tie what he describes as “some strange flies”. As some of the results actually worked on bass, panfish and saltwater species his enjoyment of designing his own flies has never left him. Joe opened The Fisherman’s Edge Fly Shop in 1989 and it existed for fifteen years before he decided to retire and play more. During those years he helped thousands of folks to enjoy fly fishing. He became a freelance writer, authored four books and numerous booklets on fly fishing and tying. One of his tying goals is to create that “silver bullet”– the fly that will catch every fish, every time. He is still looking!
