History

The Free State Fly Fishers has its origin in 1971 as a chapter club of the Maryland Fly Anglers.  Under the leadership of Woody Rough and several other members, Free State Fly Fishers was established with its own by-laws and charter on December 1, 1974.  Over the coming decade and a half, the club held its monthly meetings at Hillsmere Elementary School in Annapolis.  Then starting in the early 1990s, the club was fortunate to have acquired a clubhouse at the Davidsonville Family Recreation Center in Davidsonville, Maryland where it hosts its meetings and other activities.

Beginning with 26 charter members, the club has had as many as 200 active members over the years.  Long operating under the motto “Fellowship Through Fly fishing”, the club has kept its focus on introducing others to the sport and continuing enhancing the experiences and knowledge of its members.  In addition to a long history of monthly meetings featuring speakers on a wide array of fly fishing topics, the club has sponsored outings, fly tying sessions, beginner fly fishing clinics, and conservation programs.
