01/05/19 – Fly Tying

We will be tying the bendback. This is a great fly to fish the weeds and grass with the hook riding up like the Clouser Minnow, but it is weightless and weedless to. The hook itself is “bent back” a little bit just behind the eye, and all the materials are tied on the small bent portion of the shank so that they extend back to cover the hook point. Nearly any tying pattern can be used, streamer and deceiver patterns tend to be very effective. These flies are perfect for fishing in the mangroves for snook, or for bass fishing in the “slop” around lily pads or for pulling the fly through weeds.

I will show you how to bend a regular hook to produce the right bend. Commercial bendback hooks are too aggressive.

We will tie my crab colored fly as the bendback. I will supply all the materials except the thread.

MATERIAL:

Thread – Flat waxed fire-orange 3/0 thread
Mustad 34011 stainless steel 2/0 hook
White, tan and olive bucktail
Gold Crystal Flash
Copper Flashabou

Fly tying has remained a focus for the club, with regular fly tying sessions open to all members. During these sessions, we swap patterns, help novice tiers, learn new techniques, and just enjoy the fellowship of other members in a relaxed setting. Upcoming Fly Tying Dates. Plans for what will be the fly pattern of focus at each fly tying session are announced through a club email message distributed to all members. Materials for 2-3 flies are included. Bring your tools and vise. If you are new to tying, the club has some vises and tools you can use to get you started.
