Bruce’s Seventeen Year Cicada

I have fly fished the cicadas hatch in 1970, 1987 and 2004 with the same pattern. I tied them on stainless steel hooks because I wasn’t going to need them for another seventeen years and didn’t want rusted hooks.

I have a dozen and a half ready to do battle in 2021. I won’t be tying any more after that, do not think I will make the 2038 year hatch, I’ll be 94, but you never know, I might tie a few more up just in case. — Joe Bruce

Thread: Flat waxed 3/0 nylon in fire-orange or pink

Hook: Mustad 3366 size 1/0

Tail: The back portion of an orange deer tail

Body: Med orange chenille

Hackle: Black saddle hackle

Back: Black 1/8” foam

Legs: Four orange round rubber or silicon legs
