10/01/22 Outing – Janes Island, MD CANCELED

October 1, 2022 @ 8:00 am 9:00 pm

Fellow club members, Janes Island outing is quickly approaching and I am looking forward to fishing with you all again. Below you will find info for the outing. The first thing I would like to mention is Janes Island will be having a kayak event on Oct 1 called paddlefest. The ramp and park will be busy, currently there is only one site available for the weekend open. The rental kayaks at the park are on a first come first serve basis but because of paddle fest several outfitter are delivering to the park and you could make arrangements with them. Link to outfitters and paddlefest info here. https://dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/eastern/JanesIsland/Paddlefest.aspx

For our Saturday outing although launch time says 8 AM I would encourage everyone to launch early before the crowd. There are several other ramps available in Crisfield that can be used that day to get away from crowd.

Please reply and let me know if you will be attending. What day you will be arriving, how long you will be staying and site number. If you are willing to share a ride/site with someone please sound off I am sure there are some members that are in need of camping space.

Recommended Flies: Clousers blue/white or chartreuse/white my favorites. Murdich minnows,  Deceivers, half and halfs, alewife patterns, crease flies and any baitfish pattern that resembles silversides.   Topwater  is very good this time a year late in the evening and early morning. I recommend gurglers for top water and poppers were good last year.    I have had good luck with shrimp patterns last year. Lots of specks and perch in the marsh this time of year.

Janes Island state park is located at Janes island state park 26280 Alfred J Lawson Dr, Crisfield , MD21817and boat ramp does not close but entrance to camp ground does have limited entree after dark. You will need a watercraft of some type (canoe, kayak, rowboat, powerboat to access the water trails.  Shore fishing is available, although you are limited.  The crabbing is good from shore at the camp grounds.

Accommodations: Lots of campgrounds at the park that are currently showing available however I urge you to book soon as these campgrounds are  full almost every weekend during the summer.

There are several motels in Crisfield to spend the night in comfort if you choose to do that.

Water Trails
Janes Island State Park offers more than 30 miles of marked water trails that wind throughout the island’s saltmarsh. Most of the waterways are protected from wind and current, providing ideal conditions for both experienced and novice paddlers. Janes Island water trail system was named to the American Canoe Association’s inaugural list of recommended water trails. Three back country camp sites are located along the trails for overnight expeditions.

Boat Rentals: Solo and tandem kayaks and canoes are available for rent through the park store from late April through October, weather permitting. The cost per boat is $10 an hour or $50 for the day. Paddles and PFDs are included. Boats are rented on a first-come, first-served basis and cannot be reserved in advance. For more information, please contact the park at 410-968-1565.

Lunch: Lunch will be on the water. We can have a picnic lunch one of the beaches if members choose to take a break at the same time. Dinner will be coordinated at the one of the camp sites for the evening. Most likely mine. On previous years everyone brought a dish to share and made for a wonderful dinner. I will have a BBQ grill and stove available.

Additional: This is an enjoyable trip I have several times in the past. The marsh land gives you opportunity to explore miles of water in a safe environment. The bugs may be problems during this time of year please dress appropriately. I recommend camping the night before the fishing is best early morning. I have experience great fishing at sunrise and sunset.

Target species: Rockfish, specks, flounder, white perch.
