It’s an easy fly to tie and very effective. I use it primarily when pickerel fishing in heavy vegetation. However, I have also caught the following species with it: white and yellow perch, crappies, largemouth bass and bluegills.
Due to its construction, it runs with the hook point up. It’s therefore almost weedless and a great fly choice when fishing shallow water close to structure.
I’ll start our session with a short presentation that gives the history of the fly, the many ways it can be tied, and how and where to use it. Then we’ll tie two Bendbacks, maybe more if we have time and you have the inclination.
What you will need:
Vise
Bobbin
Thread (3/0 or 210 Denier preferred to cinch down bucktail on hook. Color is your choice.)
Scissors
Head cement or nail polish
Bucktails if you have them. Bucktail is the primary material. The photo above has three colors of bucktail. Multi-colors are not necessary but they make a nice appearance.
A pair pf pliers (See note below about hooks.)
What I will supply:
Hooks — Mustad 3366 2/0 (Note: The Bendback assumes its shape and “hook-point-up-presentation” by bending the hook shank. I will furnish a pre-bent hook for each tyer. I will also show you how to bend hooks on your own. That’s why you should bring pliers.)
Stick-on Eyes
Crystal Flash and Flashabou
Bucktails for those who do not have their own.
Please email me if you have any questions about the session. Otherwise, I look forward to seeing you at the clubhouse on Saturday 4 December at 10:00 a.m.
